Germany orders more Belgian beef
In 2018 around 890,000 heads of cattle were slaughtered in Belgium, representing a three percent decrease compared to the previous year.
The corresponding meat production amounted to 277,310 t, which represented a decline of 1.5 percent compared to 2017. The volume of global exports remained stable at 200,166 t. The main sales region was still the European Union, which accounted for 182,588 t, or 91.2 percent, of Belgian exports, representing a gain of 1.5 percent over the previous year. Belgium’s immediate neighbours still occupy the top spots on the country’s list of customers.
The Netherlands ordered 68,629 t (–3.4 %), France 39,296 t (–0.2 %), and Germany 34,132 t (+4.5 %).
The country’s exports to third countries dropped to 17,578 t, which is 20 percent less than the 2017 figures.
Ghana (6,247 t), the Ivory Coast (5,385 t) and Hong Kong (1,305 t) are still the most important destinations in spite of the decreasing volumes.
